Design Systems
Good design is modular.
In my work as a UX designer, I have gained extensive experience in the development of design systems.
Among other things, I have been supporting the Canton of Bern for five years in setting up and maintaining a code-based design system based on the «Atomic Kitchen» application I developed
During the conceptual development, the specific usage cases in which the design system is used were taken into account.
It is very important that the style guide is as user-friendly as possible, enabling users to easily find the right design component.
All design components can be evaluated responsively in the style guide.
With the help of consistent design templates and a high level of accessibility (conformity level AA), the Canton of Bern now has all the assets it needs to redesign its web-based touchpoints for the future.
The challenges that had to be mastered
- Extremely heterogeneous target groups
- Develop design standards that ensure the greatest possible unity while allowing for appropriate diversity
- Compliance with accessibility conformity level “AA”
- Design a navigation system that works equally well for small and very large websites
A large number of websites have now been implemented using the design system, here are some references
- https://www.be.ch – The comprehensive cantonal portal
